The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
