The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
